Queensland runs its own nomination stream with its own criteria, and the English requirement there is not always the federal minimum. Band 6 in each module is the usual competent English threshold, Band 7 is where proficient English points start, and Band 8 is superior. Before you set a target, check the current requirement for your occupation on the Business Queensland migration pages — nomination criteria shift between rounds and an outdated number is an expensive assumption.
If you are looking at regional Queensland rather than Brisbane itself, the 491 pathway brings additional points and a different set of nomination conditions. The English requirement usually does not drop, but the points arithmetic changes enough to be worth checking before deciding how far to push your band score.
Academic or General Training
Choose Academic if you are applying to UQ, QUT, Griffith or another Australian institution, or if a professional body such as AHPRA or Engineers Australia requires it. Choose General Training if your pathway is skilled migration and no institution has asked for Academic. The two share Listening and Speaking but differ in Reading and Writing, and preparing for the wrong one is a common and entirely avoidable waste of a fortnight.

Classes on Brisbane time
Queensland does not observe daylight saving, so between October and April Brisbane runs an hour behind Melbourne and Sydney. Morning batches suit students at UQ and QUT working around lecture timetables; evening batches suit working professionals.
